Series 2 Harley

Series 2 Harley

When I started, the face kept looking back at me in my sleep. Even with my eyes closed, he smiled with red lips and a soulless stare… then right after, as soon as I finished the Joker, I got up from bed and started on the 2nd joke: Harley...

The first one I did it looked like it was set in a room full of shoddy, maybe old windows. I figured it might be a room where they kept the ones who didn’t see reality correctly - those who didn’t  conform to social norms, those who did wrong things, tho who may have actually killed…  so figured it might be Arkham Asylum… then I started to draw Harley

Again I was inspired by the Suicide Squad’s design of Harley but I also placed some personal twists into her. I wanted to breath life into the illustration, giving it a unique life of her own… but it was hard. It was hard to depict life from a place of despair, a place where the crazy and the criminal are confined… so I didn’t resist. I didn’t breath life into her - I didn’t gave her life - I just gave her a smile.

Then she fits perfectly on that dark, damp place called Arkham.

Series one “ The Joke”

Series one “ The Joke”

Inspiration: it all started from glimpsing Jared Leto's Joker from the new Suicide Squad movie and I thought it looked tremendously stupid with all those tattoos and teeth-thing. I never collected Batman Comics and I’m not even a huge DC fan (the only DC comics I actually read was Superman) but it wasn't like I didn't like Batman- I remember following the old Batman series with Adam West on our old television.

But then I started to read “Batman - End Game," well less "read" than "watched" the Youtube semi-motion comic from an awesome channel I discovered - then I saw their version of The Joker and thought maybe this version and the Suicide Squad Joker may be interpreting the character in similar ways. Between the two interpretations, I started drafting an interpretation of my own.

What is a joke? According to that huge book called the Dictionary, a joke is a mischievous trick or prank and something not to be taken seriously… and yes I didn’t take the drawing seriously. Every time the pen makes its mark and every time it hatches the face, I felt more and more like I was doing it as the Joker might have. I became seriously attached to the design…

attached and more intimately identified with the Joker. I was both amused and scared of the face that looked back at me…

Then I started to paint...

I made it even darker - almost in the style of Rembrandt ( Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn ) one of my favorite painters but a little bit more modern to suit taste. It almost felt like I was in the same room as my subject as he silently stared into my soul smiling; it was dark - it was unnerving and it was also a celebration of light from dark… and yes it started only as a joke.
